According to the country’s health ministry, the third heatwave to hit Mexico since mid-April has claimed the lives of eight individuals.

This week, temperatures in Mexico City reached a record high of 35 degrees Celsius (95 Fahrenheit).

The health ministry stated that between April 14 and June 12, seven individuals died of heatstroke, while one person died of dehydration.

In Monterrey, a city in the northeastern region of Mexico, temperatures exceeded 40 degrees Celsius, resulting in reduced water pressure in homes and power cuts due to increased electricity demand from air conditioning units.

Wendy Tijerina, a resident of Monterrey, attributed the intensity of the heat to the city’s location in an industrial zone. She also mentioned the lack of water and frequent power cuts, making it difficult to bathe children or use fans.

To protect themselves from heatstroke, Tijerina’s family ensures they drink plenty of water.

The government of Nuevo Leon state, where Monterrey is situated, has limited school hours to two hours a day for children to avoid excessive sun exposure.

Last year, parts of Mexico experienced a drought emergency due to a heatwave and insufficient rainfall, leading to depleted reservoirs.

In certain cities, including Monterrey, households were only allowed access to running water for a few hours each day for several weeks.
