HMD Global, the company behind Nokia phones, has partnered up with the iconic doll brand Barbie for an exciting retro-inspired phone release just in time for summer 2024. HMD’s “Human Mobile Devices” and Mattel are working on the Barbie Flip Phone, a nostalgic nod to the old-school flip phones.
Mattel’s Ruth Henriquez said the company is excited to unveil the collaboration at February’s Mobile World Congress event. It represents Mattel’s continuous innovation when it comes to design. The phone promises to excite Barbie fans both young and old.
Earlier this year, rumours were floating around about Nokia phones being discontinued, especially with the Nokia website being rebranded to HMD. However, HMD Global had denied those rumours confirming that Nokia phones would still be available in the market.
Now, alongside the flashy Barbie phone, HMD plans to bring back another iconic Nokia phone design this summer. They also teased an exciting lineup of new phone brands coming out over the course of 2024.
Besides this, despite the mobile phone market shrinking for two years straight, HMD actually increased profits in 2023 thanks to company transformations like improving operational efficiency and keeping costs low.
Some other summer phone developments in the pipeline include boosting repairability and reducing the steps needed to fix a cracked screen. HMD is also launching a smartphone innovation platform for developers and businesses, with open-source design files and software integration resources available now. The goal is making phone customisation more accessible for meeting diverse user needs.
