Netflix discreetly terminates its most affordable ad-free subscription in Canada

In a surprising move, Netflix has silently removed its most affordable ad-free subscription plan in Canada.

The streaming giant’s ‘Basic’ plan, which was priced at $9.99/month and had been the cheapest plan for several years, mysteriously disappeared from Netflix’s subscription tier options on Friday.

Although Netflix has not officially announced the change, the company’s website states that the Basic plan is “no longer available for new or rejoining members.” However, existing subscribers can continue using the Basic tier until they make changes to or cancel their accounts.

It is important to note that the Basic plan is still available in the United States.

Netflix, known for its experimentation with different subscription tiers like ‘Basic with Ads’ and its upcoming crackdown on paid password sharing, is likely testing the removal of the Basic tier in Canada before implementing it in the United States. The option to share passwords will only be available on the ‘Premium’ subscription plan, which costs an additional $7.99 per user.

Currently, Canadian Netflix subscribers have the following pricing options:

  • Standard with ads: $5.99/month, 1080p video quality, simultaneous viewing on two screens, no downloads
  • Standard: $16.49/month, 1080p (Full HD) video quality, simultaneous viewing on two devices, downloads included
  • Premium: $20.99/month, 4K (Ultra HD) + HDR video quality, simultaneous viewing on four screens, downloads included

Under the new pricing structure, the cheapest option for Canadian subscribers is the $5.99/month plan with ads. Without ads, the cost jumps up to $16.95/month for the Standard plan now that the Basic tier is gone.

According to the Canadian Press, Netflix has removed the Basic option for new subscribers and plans to phase it out for current users “in the near future.”
