Dan Houser, co-founder of Rockstar Games and writer of Grand Theft Auto, has made an official announcement about his new studio, Absurd Ventures.
The YouTube description for Absurd Ventures’ enigmatic launch video reads, “Storytelling. Philanthropy. Ultraviolence.” The video itself showcases a collection of futuristic and retro-futuristic clips, interspersed with mysterious text.
The video poses the questions, “Is it acceptable to dream again?” and “Or will you simply attempt to sell me something?”
Houser, along with his brother Sam and three others, originally co-founded Rockstar Games in 1998. He remained with the company until his departure on March 11, 2020.
However, Absurd Ventures, his new studio, won’t be solely focused on video games. According to a tweet from Geoff Keighley, Absurd Ventures will be involved in “building narrative worlds, creating characters, and writing stories for a diverse range of genres, without considering the medium; whether it be live-action and animation, video games and other interactive content, books, graphic novels, or scripted podcasts.”

Houser has been working on his new studio since 2021. It was initially registered as Absurd Ventures in Games LTD here in the UK, with the company’s business nature stated as “Ready-made interactive leisure and entertainment software development.”
However, it seems that Houser’s plans have expanded beyond video games.
In addition to co-founding Rockstar, Houser served as a writer for numerous Grand Theft Auto games and all installments of Red Dead Redemption. He also wrote Bully and acted as an executive producer for L.A. Noire.
Absurd Ventures has yet to announce its first commercial project.
