New Study Reveals the Cause and Cure for a Common Type of Hypertension Discovered by Researchers

Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is a medical condition characterized by elevated pressure against the artery walls. It is a significant risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. A new study in the Nature Genetics Journal has identified a gene mutation that is likely responsible for a common form of hypertension. This groundbreaking research also proposes a potential cure that could revolutionize its treatment. Researchers discovered that a benign nodule, found in one out of every twenty individuals, is the main cause of this condition.

This nodule leads to an excess production of aldosterone, a hormone responsible for regulating salt levels in the body. During the study, health professionals uncovered the primary cause of hypertension and explained why individuals with this gene mutation often remain undiagnosed. The mutation disrupts internal cell communication, resulting in abnormal salt spikes throughout the day. It is speculated that individuals with this gene mutation can go unnoticed if they do not undergo blood testing at different times of the day.

The recommended treatment:

According to the new study, this common form of hypertension can be effectively treated by surgically removing one of the two adrenal glands through a procedure known as unilateral adrenalectomy. Currently, hypertension is managed with prescribed medications, but this surgery may offer a potential cure without the need for ongoing treatment. The gene mutation was initially observed during a clinical trial when researchers noticed abnormal hormone fluctuations in a patient.

Professor Morris Brown, co-author of the study, stated that they are also exploring alternative methods to surgical removal of the adrenal gland. “Because the aldosterone nodules in this study were so small, we are now investigating whether momentary cauterization of the nodule is an alternative to surgical removal of the whole adrenal gland,” he explained.

Hypertension – A Growing Risk in India:

It is important to note that individuals with elevated aldosterone levels in the bloodstream face a higher risk of strokes and cardiac arrest. Health professionals advise hypertension patients to regularly monitor their blood pressure and seek treatment to keep it under control. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 63% of deaths in India are caused by noncommunicable diseases, with cardiovascular conditions accounting for about 27% of those deaths. High blood pressure is a common characteristic often associated with cardiovascular diseases.
