The highly anticipated turn-based strategy game Xenonauts 2 is set to launch in Early Access on July 18, according to publisher Hooded Horse.
While a 2023 release window was announced earlier this year, Hooded Horse has now provided a specific date for fans to look forward to. Serving as the sequel to 2014’s Xenonauts, Xenonauts 2 is set in an alternate 2009 where the Cold War never ended. Players will take on the role of a secretive group tasked with defending Earth from an alien invasion, which involves shooting down UFOs, deploying soldiers, and reverse-engineering advanced alien technology.
Although Xenonauts 2 may draw comparisons to Firaxis’ XCOM reboot, the sequel actually serves as a spiritual successor to the original ’90s X-COM games, known for their challenging and detail-oriented gameplay.

The game’s Steam page highlights the “in-depth strategic layer” of Xenonauts 2, where players will need to construct bases worldwide, engage in multiple avenues of research, and carefully prioritize the use of scavenged alien technology.
On the battlefield, players will also encounter a new faction called the Cleaners, a human group of alien sympathizers who will fight alongside the invaders and attempt to undermine the player’s defenses. Developer Goldhawk Interactive has also emphasized that Xenonauts 2 will maintain the first game’s challenging turn-based combat system.
“This isn’t the story of an elite squad of heroes winning battles without consequences. War is brutal, and many of your troops will sacrifice their lives to resist the alien invasion,” states the game’s store page. “Your veteran troops will be invaluable, but even your raw recruits are skilled soldiers ready for combat. It’s your responsibility to guide them and shape them into the heroes of tomorrow.”
