News Update: State of Origin 2023

In the aftermath of Origin II, Phil Gould has expressed his belief that several NSW players would struggle to secure a spot in the Australian Kangaroos side. Queensland emerged victorious with a commanding 32-6 win at Suncorp Stadium, sealing the series after just two games. Throughout the series, a number of Maroons players who have yet to represent Australia, most notably Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow and Reece Walsh, have made significant impressions. Gould suggests that if a test side were to be chosen today, there would likely be more Queenslanders than Blues players included. He points out that in the Rugby League World Cup final against Samoa, Australia’s side consisted of 11 NSW players. Reflecting on this, Gould states that based on the performances in the two Origin games, very few NSW players would earn a spot in the Australian team.

Gould made these comments on Wide World of Sports’ “Six Tackles with Gus” podcast, highlighting the dominance of Queensland in the series. He acknowledges the role of Origin as a dress rehearsal for Test selection and suggests that many Queenslanders would have a strong case for inclusion in the national team. In the 2023 Origin series, six of the 11 players from the World Cup final were from NSW, including Nathan Cleary, Cameron Murray, Isaah Yeo, Liam Martin, Josh Addo-Carr, and James Tedesco. It is worth noting that the other five players, Latrell Mitchell, Jack Wighton, Jake Trbojevic, Reagan Campbell-Gillard, and Angus Crichton, were either injured, retired, or not selected to represent NSW this year. Gould implies that even the incumbents would struggle to retain their positions in the team, acknowledging the strength of the Queenslanders’ performances. In conclusion, Gould suggests that if Origin is indeed a selection trial for the national team, it is highly likely that numerous Queenslanders would make the cut.
