While Fittler declined to comment on his future following the defeat to the Maroons in Origin II, he later expressed his belief that he is the best choice for the job. This sentiment is shared by Damien Cook, with the veteran hooker asserting that the players, not Fittler, should be held accountable for the team’s results in the first two games of the series.
Speaking from Blues camp, Cook revealed that the players take responsibility for their performances, absolving the coaching staff of blame. He stated that the team struggled to execute a simple game plan and that the poor results were not indicative of poor coaching. Cook emphasized that the players are the ones making plays and tackles on the field, and thus should bear the scrutiny.
Confident in Fittler’s game plan, Cook expressed optimism that the coach, who has led the Blues to three series wins, will be retained for 2024. The deciding game of the series will take place at Accor Stadium on Wednesday, July 12.
