With the confirmation of the Nintendo Direct, speculation about its content has reached a boiling point. As we mentioned earlier, there are rumors about a new 2D Super Mario Bros. game and a remake of an SNES classic. Now, we have some additional information about these rumors.
Let’s start with the SNES remake. While some believed it could be a new Chrono Trigger, the latest rumors indicate a different Square Enix classic – Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. Renowned YouTuber PapaGenos, known for accurate leaks regarding Super Smash Bros. and the shadow launch of Metroid Prime Remastered, claims to have received a message about a Super Mario RPG remake. Additionally, insider Pyoro ND, who was the source of the classic SNES remake rumor, seems to be hinting at Super Mario RPG through some of their posts and likes.
Now, what about the 2D Mario game? According to Pyoro ND, it won’t be another entry in the New Super Mario Bros. series. They also shared an emoji teaser for the 2D Mario game, which is quite cryptic. My interpretation? Daisy gets kidnapped by a purple elephant. Well, that’s one possibility, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Lastly, we have another rumor from Pyoro ND. They recently posted a GIF of Detective Pikachu, leading to speculation about a potential Detective Pikachu 2 reveal. While Pokemon announcements are usually reserved for Pokemon Directs, spinoffs have made appearances in regular Nintendo Direct shows before.
However, it’s essential to take all of these rumors with a grain of salt. Although the Nintendo Direct news proved to be accurate, not everything rumored for the show may come to fruition. The 2D Mario rumors seem to be gaining traction, but I’m personally holding back my excitement regarding Super Mario RPG.
