North Queensland Cowboys, Makenzie Weale offered season ending ban for worst hip drop in loss to St George Illawarra Dragons

Cowboys NRLW prop Makenzie Weale’s season is all but over after she was suspended for two games for a hip drop on Dragons lock Alexis Tauaneai.

The incident occurred in the shadows of half time with her side already trailing 22-6, when Weale appeared to drop her weight on the back of Tauaneai’s legs.

Tauaneai immediately screamed out in pain as she hit the ground before medics rushed to her assistance.

“That’s awkward, you don’t want to see that,” Cowboys legend Johnathan Thurston said in commentary for Nine.

Tauaneai stayed down for several minutes as she was treated by medics before getting up and limping off the ground in tears. She took no further part in the match.

Referee Liam Kennedy sent Weale for a 10-minute spell in the sin bin. The Red V only scored once while she was off the ground.

After the match, Dragons coach Jamie Soward said he thought the tackle was “probably the worst hip drop I’ve seen, in men’s or women’s”.

“I’m not being disrespectful, this isn’t a personal attack, but I was really disappointed with that as a coach and a club we’re very disappointed because that’s two weeks in a row we’ve had hip drops happen on our players,” he said.

“For a young girl like Alexis who’s 18 and has probably been our best forward all year, I was really disappointed in that tackle.”

Weale was hit with a grade three dangerous contact charge and offered two games with an early plea.

The former Knight wasn’t the only Cowboy cited for a hit on Tauaneai with Tiana Raftstrand-Smith was also given a warning for a similar tackle in the 14th minute.

The Cowboys sit ninth on the ladder with two games remaining in the regular season. They need not only win both of those but to also have a miracle run of results go their way to make the competition’s top four.
