Nvidia’s RTX 4060: A Pleasant Surprise to Look Forward to

Nvidia’s highly anticipated RTX 4060 is on the horizon, and the first benchmark results have started to leak. Two tests have already been spotted, and they paint a positive picture for this GPU. Compared to the popular RTX 3060, the upcoming Ada Lovelace model is expected to outperform it by approximately 20%.

With such promising performance, could the RTX 4060 become one of the best and most popular GPUs of this generation?

The benchmarks, initially reported by BenchLeaks, consisted of two Geekbench 6 tests for an unnamed RTX 4060 GPU. The tests included the GPU Compute test using Vulkan and another test utilizing OpenCL. While the scores varied slightly, it is evident that the RTX 4060 will provide a notable generational improvement.

In the Vulkan test, the RTX 4060 achieved a score of 99,419 points, and in the OpenCL test, it reached 105,630 points. These scores represent a significant increase compared to the RTX 3060’s average scores of 85,996 and 88,280 points, respectively, as reported by Tom’s Hardware. Additionally, the RTX 4060 surpasses the AMD RX 7600, scoring higher in Vulkan (95,147 points) and OpenCL (80,209 points). Overall, the OpenCL score indicates that the RTX 4060 is around 20% faster than its predecessor, while the Vulkan lead is approximately 12%.

However, it is important to note that benchmark scores do not always directly reflect gaming performance. The RTX 4060 may face some challenges with its VRAM capacity, but considering its budget price of $300, it is expected to offer acceptable performance. While more expensive GPUs like the RTX 4060 Ti usually require more than 8GB of video memory, the RTX 4060 might be an exception due to its price point.

The RTX 4060 is rumored to feature 3,072 CUDA cores, 8GB of VRAM on a 128-bit memory bus, and 24MB of L2 cache. Despite having fewer cores than its predecessor, the increased cache size should contribute to improved performance. Additionally, this new model introduces Nvidia’s DLSS 3, which could entice users to upgrade at a relatively low cost.

The success of the RTX 4060 is crucial for Nvidia, especially considering the reputation of its Ada Lovelace generation, which is known for overpriced GPUs that offer poor value. If the RTX 4060 can deliver decent performance for just $300, it has the potential to be a major hit.

Will the RTX 4060 become the go-to choice for value-oriented PC builds? Only time will tell. With limited benchmark scores available at the moment, nothing can be certain. We will have a clearer picture when we test the card ourselves closer to its release date of June 29.
