Paul Gallen cautions Ben Hunt against hasty departure prior to Shane Flanagan’s arrival amidst Dragons release talks

League superstar Paul Gallen has expressed concern over Ben Hunt’s decision to leave the Dragons, urging him to fulfill his contract with the club. Despite newly-appointed coach Shane Flanagan’s request for Hunt to stay, the Dragons skipper is seeking an immediate release. Gallen, who was coached by Flanagan at Cronulla, believes Hunt should give the coach a chance to turn things around before making any hasty decisions.

“I’m surprised, like everyone else,” Gallen said on Nine’s NRL Sunday Footy Show. “Ben Hunt seems to be basing his decisions on the club’s past performances. While things haven’t gone well for the Dragons, he has been paid a significant amount of money and has not been able to take the team to a semi-final. It’s not solely his fault, as rugby league is a team sport, but he also hasn’t attracted top talent to the club.”

Gallen believes that Hunt should think about the future and consider the potential under Flanagan’s leadership. Flanagan is known for his ability to build successful rosters, taking a team from last place to a premiership victory in just two years. Gallen suggests that Hunt should meet with Flanagan and discuss the future before making any rushed decisions.

“If I were the Dragons, I wouldn’t let him go,” Gallen added.

Hunt has been linked to moves with the Bulldogs and Titans, but Gallen believes neither team offers a better chance at winning a premiership compared to the Dragons. Gallen stated, “If he wants to win a premiership, he should consider other options. The Bulldogs and Titans are unlikely to secure a premiership in the next few years.”

Former Maroons star Sam Thaiday also questioned the timing of Hunt’s request. Thaiday expressed confusion as to why the news broke while Hunt was in Origin camp, believing it would have been better to wait until after the games.

While it remains uncertain whether Hunt will be granted an exit from the Dragons, his teammate Josh Kerr’s request has been approved. Kerr is set to join the Dolphins and will be available to play against the Eels next weekend.
