Phoebe Litchfield, Promising Newcomer, Contests Controversial lbw Decision

Australian prodigy Phoebe Litchfield endured a nightmarish Test debut as she walked off the field despite not being out.

Litchfield, a 20-year-old, received her coveted baggy green before the Ashes at Trent Bridge and confidently strode to the crease as the opening batswoman alongside Beth Mooney.

She displayed remarkable composure and skill, scoring 23 runs off 32 deliveries, before making the ill-fated decision to leave a swinging delivery from Kate Cross. Unfortunately, the ball struck Litchfield on the front pad.

The umpire ruled her out, and both Litchfield and Mooney decided not to review the decision. However, replays clearly showed that the ball would have missed the stumps, and the decision would have been overturned.

“It was intriguing to watch that delivery because she was hit, and then she pulled her leg back,” remarked Mel Jones in commentary.

Debutant’s missed opportunity of a review

“I think… the reason they chose not to go upstairs was because when she pulled her leg back, it made everything look more aligned,” Jones added.

“I believe that in Phoebe Litchfield’s mind, she had already considered herself out, so she needed to be assertive and insist on going through the review process instead.”

PERRY’S DODGED BULLET

During the early stages of her innings, Ellyse Perry narrowly escaped being incorrectly given out on only 10 runs.

England debutant Lauren Filer appealed for an lbw decision against Perry with her first ball, but the Australian batswoman wisely opted for a review, which showed that she had made contact with the ball.
