Samsung has been a long-time supporter of the DeX feature, which allows top Galaxy phones to connect to a larger screen. Now, it seems that Google is following suit with their upcoming Pixel 8 and 8 Pro.
A reputable leaker, Kamila Wojciechowska, has revealed insider information suggesting that the Pixel 8 will support the USB DisplayPort alternate mode, also known as DisplayPort over USB-C. This means that instead of using cumbersome RCA connectors or HDMI cables, slimmer devices like smartphones can transmit content to a monitor or TV.
With the ability to cast content on a monitor, the Pixel 8 could serve as a makeshift desktop replacement. While it may not possess the power to fully replace a computer, the inclusion of a keyboard and mouse will certainly make light productivity work possible.
It’s worth noting that Samsung isn’t the only competitor in this space. Mid-tier and flagship phones from Motorola have a desktop mode called Ready For, and other brands like Huawei, Xiaomi, and Oppo also offer similar experiences.
Support for the USB DisplayPort alternate mode in the Android 14 beta, as previously revealed by Mishaal Rahman, further supports the likelihood that the Pixel 8 will indeed have this capability.
It remains to be seen whether other Android phones eligible for Android 14, including current Pixel phones, will also receive this display mode. However, it seems improbable as the mode requires proper support from the devices.
Two other devices that may potentially receive the desktop mode are the Pixel Tablet and Pixel Fold. However, there is currently no solid evidence to support this speculation. Additionally, the Pixel desktop mode reportedly still needs significant improvements, which suggests that it will likely debut on the Pixel 8 duo scheduled for an October release.
