Tips to Protect Your Eyes During the Rainy Season

Rainy days bring relief from scorching heat and add a refreshing touch to the environment. However, the rainy season also comes with an increased risk of infectious diseases due to high humidity and moisture in the air. One common eye infection during this time is conjunctivitis, also known as pink eye.

To keep your eyes healthy and prevent conjunctivitis, Dr. Yogesh Gupta, Sr. Consultant Physician at Sterling Hospitals, Gurukul, shares the following tips:

  1. Avoid Touching Your Eyes – Rainwater can contain dirt, bacteria, and allergens. Avoid rubbing or touching your eyes to minimize the risk of infection.
  2. Use Protective Eyewear – If you need to be outside during the rain, consider wearing waterproof or wrap-around sunglasses to shield your eyes from rainwater, debris, and contaminants.
  3. Keep Hands and Face Clean – Regularly wash your hands and face with soap and clean water to remove dirt and germs, reducing the chances of infection.
  4. Avoid Sharing Personal Items – If someone in your household or workplace has conjunctivitis, avoid sharing items like towels, pillowcases, or eye makeup to prevent the spread of infection.
  5. Seek Medical Attention – If you experience persistent redness, itching, discharge, or vision problems, consult an eye care professional for early detection and treatment.
  6. Avoid Self-Medication – If you have symptoms like red eyes, itching, white discharge, or swelling, avoid using eye drops or medications without consulting a doctor, as they may contain harmful substances.
  7. Protect Children – If your children have symptoms of conjunctivitis, keep them at home and seek immediate medical attention instead of neglecting or self-medicating.

Follow these tips to minimize the risk of conjunctivitis and remember that prevention is always better than cure.
