Jack Quaid’s Boimler raises questions in a preview for the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds/Lower Decks crossover episode titled “Those Old Scientists” in Season 2.

Okay, in a season filled with great episodes thus far, the highly anticipated Star Trek: Strange New Worlds/Lower Decks crossover episode is finally here. In Paramount+’s Season 2, Episode 7 titled “Those Old Scientists,” starring Anson Mount as Pike, Rebecca Romijn as Una Chin-Riley, and Ethan Peck as Spock, we see Jack Quaid’s Boimler and Tawny Newsome’s Mariner making their live-action debut as they jump from the animated series. This unexpected crossover event allowed us to work with our extended family from the other show, both on and off camera. Directed by Jonathan Frakes, this episode is a true “Star Trek” melting pot, with more surprises to come,” revealed EP Akiva Goldsman during a recent interview.

Thanks to The Ready Room hosted by Wil Wheaton, we now have a sneak preview of what’s to come. After a time portal sends Boimler through time from the twenty-fourth century, Captain Pike and the crew must ensure his safe return and protect the timeline. In the preview, Boimler finds himself in a three-dimensional world.

Jonathan Frakes shared his excitement about the crossover episode, stating, “It’s so good. I have Jack Quaid and Tawny Newsome, who are both amazing. This episode is a flat-out comedy, and they take some really big swings on Strange New Worlds. It’s clever and simple. When these characters come over, they’re accepted as part of the Enterprise. This crossover allowed the actors on Strange New Worlds to play more broadly, and it brought out a lot of positives. Anson’s a wonderful comedian, as is Rebecca. Ethan and everyone else were encouraged to embrace the comedic elements. It’s not ‘Roger Rabbit,’ but it’s a delightful and fearless crossover with an animated show.”

If Akiva Goldsman’s wishes come true, there may be more crossovers in the future. “I am open to the idea of crossing over into other series timelines. However, it must serve the story and not just be fan service. We love servicing fans, but there must be a purpose to the crossover, and I believe there are many possibilities,” Goldsman explained.
