The Jack Kirby Estate has issued an official response to the recent Stan Lee Documentary on Disney+ shared with Bleeding Cool

Last week, Disney+ premiered a new documentary about the life of Stan Lee, featuring Lee’s own narration. In response, the Jack Kirby Estate, represented by Neal Kirby and Jillian Kirby, released an official statement expressing their concerns regarding the documentary’s portrayal of the creation of Marvel characters.

In their statement, the Jack Kirby Estate expresses their disagreement with the documentary’s portrayal of the creation of Marvel characters. They argue that the documentary perpetuates false information and disregards Jack Kirby’s significant contributions to the Marvel Universe. The Estate believes that Jack Kirby’s role as a visionary and creative force in the creation of these iconic characters has been overlooked. They invite fans to explore Jack Kirby’s perspective on the creation of superheroes and emphasize the importance of preserving his legacy.

Jack Kirby, alongside Joe Simon, co-created Captain America in 1940 for Marvel Comics. His collaborations with Stan Lee in the sixties resulted in the creation of numerous Marvel characters, such as the Fantastic Four, X-Men, Avengers, Hulk, Ant-Man, Thor, Iron Man, and Black Panther. Despite his immense contributions, Kirby faced disputes with Marvel regarding credit, compensation, and artwork rights. He later joined DC Comics and created memorable characters like Darkseid and the New Gods. Kirby’s impact extended beyond comics into animation and creator-owned projects. He passed away in 1994 at the age of 76.

The debate surrounding Jack Kirby’s contributions to the Marvel Universe compared to Stan Lee has been a topic of discussion. The Kirby family, represented by Marc Toberoff, filed a lawsuit against Marvel and Disney, resulting in a settlement believed to be over $30 million.

Bleeding Cool recently reported on Tom Scioli’s revival of Jack Kirby’s work in “Jack Kirby’s Star Warriors.”
