Rewritten title: The Third Test of Ashes 2023

After causing a stir with his send-off to Steve Smith, Jonny Bairstow received some cheeky retaliation from the Australian players following his dismissal on day four of the third Ashes Test. Bairstow was bowled out for just five runs by an impressive delivery from Mitchell Starc, leaving England 79 runs short of saving the Ashes. As Bairstow made his way back to the pavilion, one of the Aussies, possibly David Warner, could be heard saying “see ya, Jonny” through the stump microphones.

This incident came just two days after a tense exchange between Smith and Bairstow, where Bairstow had given Smith a send-off after his dismissal in the second innings. Bairstow had advanced down the pitch and chipped the ball to Ben Duckett at midwicket, prompting him to say “See ya, Smudge!” As Smith turned to respond, Bairstow clarified, “I said cheers! See ya later!”

Commenting on the banter between the players, Australian cricket legend Mark Taylor stated that Bairstow probably expected some teasing from the Aussies during his walk off on day four. Taylor emphasized that as long as the sledging remains within boundaries and limited to a few words here and there, it is all in good spirit. He also mentioned that the teams are getting along better than what some people back home may think.

Bairstow’s dismissal was England’s sixth wicket, bringing in Chris Woakes to the crease. Woakes then formed a strong partnership with Harry Brook, adding 59 runs for the seventh wicket. However, the partnership was broken when Brook mistimed a shot against Starc, skyed the ball, and allowed Pat Cummins to take the catch, colliding with Starc in the process. Woakes and Mark Wood then guided England to a thrilling three-wicket victory.

Both teams will now have a break before the fourth Test begins at Old Trafford on July 19. Stay updated with all the Ashes action on 9Now, where you can watch every ball live, for free and exclusively. Highlights and replays will also be available after each day’s play.
