SANZAAR Copes with Calendar Confusion; Hamish McLennan’s Comments Cause Retreat

SANZAAR is retracting the statements made by its chairman, Hamish McLennan, regarding potential changes to the Rugby Championship and Super Rugby Pacific schedule. McLennan had suggested that alterations were being considered to better accommodate South Africa and Argentina, but New Zealand Rugby was standing in the way. South Africa had proposed moving the Rugby Championship from its usual August-September-October timeframe to March and April, which would provide more rest time for players competing in Europe. This would also require shifting the Super Rugby Pacific season to run from May to September instead of February to June. However, it has now been clarified that these changes are off the table, and both competitions will remain unchanged until 2026. Reports suggest that World Rugby and Six Nation organizers were informed of this decision after a meeting in Paris chaired by McLennan in May. SANZAAR released a statement emphasizing that the existing playing window will remain in place until 2026 and that the national unions are working on competition models for future seasons. SANZAAR is also involved in World Rugby’s program to explore the creation of a global calendar and review playing windows. The organization apologized for any confusion caused by McLennan’s comments. The debate surrounding the Super Rugby Pacific commission continues, while this year’s Rugby Championship will start in July and return to its regular August slot next year.
