WhatsApp is reportedly testing a faster way for you to know when your contacts were recently online. To be clear, the instant messaging platform already shows you the “online” status of people in real time when you open their chat, but a new app setting, allegedly in the works, will give you the deets without hitting up individual contacts.

Popular WhatsApp update tracker website WABetaInfo has spotted a new tab called “recently online” inside the app’s interface that apparently shows you a list of people who were recently online.
The blog is quick to note that the section only shows a “limited number of recent active contacts”, not a “comprehensive online list of all contacts”, so presumably WhatsApp is using some type of algorithm to sort out relevant/most frequently contacts to appear in the recently online list.
In line with its privacy protocols, we can expect the information won’t carry a timestamp if someone has set it off.
The recently online tab was spotted on WhatsApp for Android version 2.24.9.14. It remains to be seen if WhatsApp plans to launch it worldwide anytime soon.
