Supercars news | The key question in Shane van Gisbergen’s move to NASCAR

Shane van Gisbergen, the talented race car driver, is generating speculation about his racing plans for 2024. While NASCAR is widely known for its prestigious Cup Series, it is important to note that it encompasses a comprehensive ladder system with various racing series. It is likely that van Gisbergen will compete in the top-tier Cup Series, but in a limited capacity that will primarily include road course races.

Van Gisbergen has expressed his intention to participate in a full-time program, either in the second-tier Xfinity Series or the third-tier Truck Series. He has already made his debut in the Truck Series, showcasing his skills at the Indianapolis Raceway Park, where he finished 19th, just outside the lead lap. In the Cup Series, van Gisbergen has had two starts with Trackhouse Racing, and despite interest from other teams, owner Justin Marks plans to have him remain in his stable for the 2024 season in a role that is yet to be confirmed.

However, there might be a potential obstacle for van Gisbergen’s aspiration of a full-time Cup Series program. NASCAR may prefer that he first gain experience in superspeedways in the lower divisions before competing in the Cup Series. Nevertheless, Marks is determined to secure a deal for van Gisbergen and believes in his talent and potential. Marks stated, “He’s just really, really good. When he goes through the learning process on an oval I think he’ll get really quickly up to speed. We’re just really excited about that.”

Regarding the charter system, which grants a team the ability to compete in the Cup Series, Marks mentioned that he currently does not possess a charter for van Gisbergen in 2024. Nevertheless, Marks does not believe that owning a charter is absolutely necessary for racing success and growth. He emphasized his commitment to expanding and developing his racing business without solely relying on the ability to purchase a charter.

After the conclusion of the Supercars season, there is a possibility that van Gisbergen might immediately transition to the United States and participate in late model stock car races. It seems increasingly likely that van Gisbergen will eventually compete full-time in the Cup Series. The timing, whether in 2024 or 2025, remains uncertain. However, Marks has no doubt that van Gisbergen will excel, stating, “His rate of adaptation has been such that we really believe this is a guy that can come in and be a star in this sport.”

It is expected that Triple Eight Race Engineering will announce van Gisbergen’s departure from the Supercars team in the upcoming week, solidifying his commitment to pursuing his NASCAR career.
