Tamil Nadu Lok Sabha election live: In addition to 20 other states and Union Territories, voting is underway for Lok Sabha constituencies in Tamil Nadu on Friday, marking the commencement of the general election’s first phase. A range of political figures and notable personalities voted for the Lok Sabha polls at various polling stations throughout Tamil Nadu on Friday.

Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi cast his ballot at a local polling station, joined by chief minister MK Stalin, former chief ministers O Panneerselvam and Edappadi K Palaniswami, and various political leaders. Ravi and Stalin encouraged citizens to participate enthusiastically and fulfil their democratic responsibility.

Stalin, accompanied by his wife Durga Stalin, DMK leader Kanimozhi (running in Thoothukudi), and BJP leaders L Murugan (contestant in Nilgiris) and Tamilisai Soundararajan (South Chennai candidate), also voted in the same area.

The seven-phase electoral process began at 7 am in 102 parliamentary constituencies in 21 states and Union Territories, with voting continuing until 6 pm

Political parties in fray

The parliamentary elections in Tamil Nadu will see competition between the ruling DMK, opposition AIADMK, and BJP. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, led by current Chief Minister M K Stalin, the DMK secured a sweeping victory, winning 38 out of 39 seats.

Approximately 6.23 crore voters in Tamil Nadu will determine the fate of 950 candidates by casting their votes across nearly 68,000 polling stations today.

    Tamil Nadu Lok Sabha election live: Chennai Central maintains low voter turnout

    Tamil Nadu Lok Sabha election live: Polling in Chennai Central witnessed the lowest voter turnout in the state’s ongoing elections as of 3pm. According to chief electoral officer Satyabrata Sahoo, the turnout in this constituency was 24.09 per cent at 11 am, 32.31 per cent at 1 pm, and 41.47 per cent at 3 pm. 

    At 3pm, the overall voter turnout in the state stood at 51.41 per cent. Dharmapuri recorded the highest turnout with 57.86 per cent, followed by Namakkal at 57.67 per cent, and Kallakurichi at 57.34 per cent.

    Tamil Nadu Lok Sabha election live: In 2021, Nalaini Kirubakaran sought an Indian passport, which was initially denied by a regional passport office. Following her petition to the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court, she was granted the passport in August 2022. 

    The court cited the Citizenship Act, 1995, affirming her Indian citizenship as she was born in Mandapam between January 26, 1950, and July 1, 1987. 

    Despite obtaining her passport, Nalaini resides in a rehabilitation camp with special permission from the district collector, as her family remains stateless within the Trichy refugee camp. Subsequently, she applied for a voter ID card, receiving it in January 2024.

    Tamil Nadu Lok Sabha election live: On Friday, Chief Electoral Officer Satyabrata Sahoo in Chennai said that apart from minor glitches with electronic voting machines (EVMs) at a few locations, the voting process was incident-free.

    “There was a delay of about five to twenty minutes in four or five polling booths in Porur, Dharmapuri and Tiruchirappalli after the EVMs malfunctioned, probably due to lost wiring or cable fault,” Sahoo told reporters.

    However, the machines were promptly fixed, and the voting process resumed without significant delay, he added.
