Tesla employee loses job after a month of joining, says he can’t pay his rent

Layoffs can be an overwhelming experience, especially when they are abrupt and unexpected. And recently in the tech world, more and more companies have been firing employees without any prior notice. From Google and Meta to Twitter and Microsoft, tech giants have handed the pink slip to many techies in the last few months, citing different reasons. And recently, Elon Musk’s Tesla announced firing thousands of people. As per reports, over 10 percent of Tesla’s workforce (roughly 14,000 employees) was laid off earlier this week. And now, a Tesla employee has come forward and shared his side of the story, saying that he is unable to pay rent after losing his job.

The ex-Tesla employee, named Ezkel Love, told Kvue.com that he got an email telling him about his layoff. Love, who had been assembling Model Y cars at Tesla’s headquarters in Texas, received his termination letter on Monday. Expressing his disappointment, he said that the company is supposed to take leadership in innovation and would have been the best place for him to learn manufacturing.

It had been just one month since Love joined Tesla. After losing his job abruptly, he added that he was struggling to pay his rent.

“No warning at all. I don’t have a job. Can’t pay my rent. So, I’ve got to find something else to do to make ends meet,” he told the publication.

Elon Musk, at midnight on Sunday, had sent an email to his employees, informing them about their layoff. In the email, Musk revealed plans to cut “more than 10 percent” of the global workforce to prepare for the company’s “next phase of growth.”

“Over the years, we have grown rapidly with multiple factories scaling around the globe. With this rapid growth, there has been duplication of roles and job functions in certain areas. As we prepare the company for our next phase of growth, it is extremely important to look at every aspect of the company for cost reductions and increasing productivity, Musk wrote in the email.

“As part of this effort, we have done a thorough review of the organisation and made the difficult decision to reduce our headcount by more than 10% globally. There is nothing I hate more, but it must be done. This will enable us to be lean, innovative and hungry for the next growth phase cycle,” he added.

Some employees, like Love, were caught off guard, only learning of their job loss upon arriving at work on Monday. It was also reported that security guards in Tesla offices told employees that if their ID badges were no longer active, it meant that they had been laid off.
