Tourism Trade Group Reports 50% Surge in Tourist Bookings from January to May

Tourist bookings have increased by 50% from January to May compared to the same period last year. The majority of this growth is driven by domestic travelers, indicating the potential for even more growth once international tourists return to pre-pandemic levels.

Fe Abling-Yu, President of the Philippine Tour Operators Association (PHILTOA), shared this information during an interview with the Inquirer. She expressed improved optimism for the tourism industry, which was severely impacted during the peak of the COVID-19 crisis.

Abling-Yu also noted that many corporate accounts refrained from holding conferences or incentivized travel for employees last year. However, they are now enthusiastic about traveling, as well as spending on accommodations and food during their trips.

In terms of foreign bookings, Abling-Yu acknowledged that they have not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels. However, she remains hopeful that by 2024, foreign tourist numbers will improve. Currently, the country is only experiencing a small number of foreign tourists.

In the first half of 2023, the Department of Tourism recorded over two million international arrivals, accounting for almost half of the government’s target of 4.8 million foreign visitors for the year.

Abling-Yu also emphasized the importance of promoting Mindanao as the next popular tourist destination. She believes that if the region is given the attention it deserves, the tourism industry will flourish and generate thousands of jobs.

“We are focusing on developing emerging destinations, such as Basilan de Isabela. PHILTOA wants to contribute to the development of these up-and-coming destinations,” said Abling-Yu.
