I have always been a fan of FEAR, so it should come as no surprise that I’m drawn to horror titles. Shooters and horror games have a special place in my heart, and finding a game that combines the two in a thrilling and terrifying way is rare. That’s why Trepang2 caught my attention as the supposed spiritual successor to the FEAR series.

Trepang2 heavily emphasizes its action elements. Using Focus, you can slow down time and take precise shots at waves of enemies. The trailers showcased fast-paced gameplay and intense action sequences that promised an exciting experience. However, what really intrigued me were the game’s more intricate storytelling and horror-based aspects. It reminded me of games like Resident Evil 4 Remake and Dead Space, where horror seamlessly merges with action.

Unfortunately, Trepang2 sometimes struggles to find the right balance between genres, resulting in an underwhelming experience. However, if you lean more towards one side (especially with the cheats available in the post-game), you’ll discover the game’s greatness as a mindless, fun shooter.

The story in Trepang2 is straightforward. You awaken in an unknown compound, surrounded by enemies who want you dead. As you progress, you learn that you are Subject 106, a super soldier experiment created by the Horizon Corporation. Your mission becomes clear: take down this evil corporation and its idiotic experiments – a task that leads you to join the TF22 forces.

Trepang2 wastes no time in demonstrating the consequences of human experimentation. From fighting supernatural enemies like radioactive-spitting zombies to being chased by anomalous beings that mute the game’s audio, the horror elements are genuinely terrifying. The graphics in Trepang2 are a standout feature, with stunning visuals and detailed environments. The game effortlessly maintains a high framerate and offers explosions galore, making you wonder why other games struggle to achieve the same level of visual spectacle.

One aspect where Trepang2 excels is its atmospheric presentation. The game expertly builds suspense as you navigate desolate corridors, and then ramps up the action as you unleash your inner Duke Nukem on armed troops. The gameplay mechanics are straightforward, with familiar shooter controls and the addition of Focus and Cloak abilities to enhance your combat experience. Cloaking renders you invisible, allowing for surprise attacks or quick escapes when overwhelmed. Focus slows down time, enabling precise shots and granting a slight movement advantage. Managing your stamina and strategically using slide maneuvers add depth to the combat system.

The gunplay is a true highlight of Trepang2. With a wide range of weapons to choose from, including Sniper Rifles, Pistols, Shotguns, and SMGs, the game offers ample customization options. The ability to modify guns and trade off certain attributes adds depth to the gameplay. Personally, I prefer a shotgun that sacrifices overall damage for incendiary rounds that light enemies on fire. Experimenting with different combinations and finding the weapons that suit your playstyle adds to the enjoyment.

While enemy variety may not be Trepang2’s strong suit, the challenge lies in dispatching them efficiently while taking minimal damage. The enemies range from light to heavy, each posing a different threat. The game rewards aggressive gameplay and quick kills, as Focus and stamina recharge with each successful takedown.

Trepang2 also incorporates sparse but exceptional horror sequences that surpass FEAR 2’s attempts. These chilling moments are a standout feature, but unfortunately, they are few and far between compared to the action-packed set pieces and explosive gameplay. It was disappointing to see the game’s potential for horror not fully realized.

Overall, Trepang2 is a fantastic choice for shooter enthusiasts who crave thrilling and spooky experiences. However, for non-shooter fans or those seeking horror akin to the FEAR franchise, it may feel lacking. Nonetheless, the game offers unforgettable sequences, challenging difficulty, and a self-aware tone that shines through when cheats are enabled.
