Ubisoft Addresses Concerns: No Game Library Deletion Due to Inactivity

Ubisoft games fans experienced a momentary panic over the weekend due to rumors that Ubisoft might delete inactive Ubisoft accounts, resulting in the permanent loss of digital game libraries. However, Ubisoft has clarified that these rumors are false, ensuring users that their digital game libraries are safe even if their accounts are inactive.

The rumors began when a tweet circulated, showing an email titled “Ubisoft Account Closure Due to Inactivity.” The email stated that the recipient’s Ubisoft account had been temporarily suspended and would be permanently closed in 30 days unless the account owner canceled the closure.

The authenticity of the email was confirmed by the official Ubisoft Support Twitter account, which re-emphasized the instructions for canceling the pending account closure.

While the email and instructions were legitimate, it was the claim made by the original poster that caused the panic. The individual stated, “You will lose all your games purchased forever.”

Ubisoft addressed the issue in an email to IGN, clarifying its stance on account deletions. The publisher acknowledged that it has been deleting inactive accounts in compliance with the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) for many years. These deletions serve as a means of adhering to legal requirements, industry standards, and preventing fraud.

However, Ubisoft made it clear that accounts associated with purchased games are not subject to deletion. The publisher considers several factors before deleting an account:

  • The account’s gaming activity since its creation
  • The contents of the account’s libraries: accounts with purchased PC games are exempt from deletion [emphasis Ubisoft’s]
  • The duration of inactivity, measured by the last login to Ubisoft’s ecosystem (including from Ubisoft games on Steam and other platforms)
    • To date, accounts inactive for less than 4 years have never been deleted
  • The existence of an active subscription tied to the account

Ubisoft clarified that users receive emails, such as the one circulated, 30 days prior to account deletion. If a user logs in during this window, they will receive a notice and a reactivation link upon login. More information on Ubisoft’s account closure policy can be found on its official website.

Therefore, if you haven’t logged into your Ubisoft account in years, you don’t need to worry about losing your game library. However, concerns about the digital ownership of games and the potential loss of libraries at any time still persist, especially as digital game releases continue to surpass physical ones. Rest assured that in this particular situation, Ubisoft is not deleting accounts haphazardly.
