Very hot summer drives auto industry toward sustainability

Paul Thomas, executive vice president of Bosch Mobility Solutions, Americas, acknowledged the increased focus on climate issues this summer, prompting the company to place more emphasis on worker safety and comfort at its factories and offices.

“Sustainability is a constant priority for us. We have always been motivated to act swiftly,” he shared with Automotive News. “However, the urgency to protect the Earth and make quick progress is now greater than ever before.”

During his speech in Traverse City, Thomas highlighted the growing urgency for electrification and connectivity in the auto industry, which poses management challenges for suppliers in terms of capital allocation and profitability.

Thomas expressed his concerns by stating, “The technology landscape keeps me awake at night. Am I investing in the right areas at the right time? Do I have enough resources dedicated to both internal combustion programs and EV programs? It is important to ensure that employees working on existing technologies understand our commitment to all areas of innovation.”

One aspect of this innovation is the electric bicycle market. Bosch, the world’s largest auto supplier, has become the leader in eBike power systems, which has generated $1 billion in new business, according to Thomas.

To accelerate Bosch’s transformation into a diversified company offering sustainable mobility products and services, the company announced in May its plan to adopt a new corporate structure named Bosch Mobility, effective January. At that time, Thomas will assume the role of president of Bosch Mobility Americas, overseeing operations in North and South America.

Thomas believes that this structural change will enable Bosch to navigate the rapidly evolving industry landscape as it ventures into new areas, including hydrogen fuel cells and software services.
