Vitesco Secures $1 Billion Agreement for Silicon Carbide Microchips

German powertrain supplier, Vitesco Technologies, has announced a groundbreaking partnership with Japanese microchip manufacturer, Rohm Co., to secure over $1 billion worth of silicon carbide semiconductors until 2030.

Vitesco plans to integrate these microchips into inverters for electric vehicle powertrains as early as 2024. While the company has not disclosed the identities of the two customers for these inverters, the move aims to address the increasing demand for semiconductors as the industry shifts towards electric and software-driven vehicles.

Commenting on the agreement, Vitesco CEO Andreas Wolf stated, “The supply partnership agreement with Rohm is a vital step in ensuring Vitesco Technologies’ long-term silicon carbide capabilities.”

Vitesco Technologies is the newest player in the market to invest in silicon carbide semiconductors, which offer higher efficiency compared to traditional silicon chips. In April, Robert Bosch also made a similar move by acquiring a California chip maker and committing $1.5 billion to meet the rising demand for silicon carbide chips.

In 2021, Vitesco Technologies spun off from Continental AG and currently holds the 26th position on Automotive News’ prestigious list of top global suppliers. The company achieved impressive worldwide sales of $9.5 billion last year.
