In the ongoing second Test match at the Gabba, West Indies fast bowler Shamar Joseph suffered a painful injury that could sideline him for the remainder of the game. The incident occurred in the second innings of the West Indies team when Australian pacer Mitchell Starc delivered a toe-crushing yorker.

In the 73rd over, Starc’s inswinging delivery struck Joseph on his right foot, initially leading to an LBW dismissal by umpire Sharfuddoula Saikat. However, replays revealed Starc’s foot had crossed the popping crease, rendering the ball a no-ball.

Despite being spared the dismissal, Joseph faced immediate physical distress. He removed his shoe and signalled for medical assistance, revealing a concerning sight of blood from his big toe. The severity of the injury was such that Joseph, having scored just 3 runs, had no choice but to retire hurt. This brought the West Indies innings to a close at 193 all out.

The 24-year-old bowler was visibly struggling to walk and could not bear weight on his injured foot. He required help from teammate Kevin Sinclair and a team medic to leave the field. Australian players Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon showed sportsmanship, offering Joseph a supportive gesture as he made his way off the field.

Joseph was unable to return for Australia’s second innings, and the West Indies team confirmed that he had been sent for medical scans. His absence will be felt as West Indies face the challenge of defending a 216-run target set by Australia.

In Australia’s chase, the batting side had a shaky start, losing opener Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne early, with the score at 42/2 after 10.2 overs. Steve Smith, despite recent form struggles, is looking in fine touch, batting on 26 off 34 balls. The Australian team needed 174 more runs to win in what is turning out to be a gripping Test match.
