West Indies Miss Qualification for ICC World Cup 2023 for the First Time

After their loss to Scotland in the Super Six stage of the ongoing World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe, West Indies has unfortunately failed to qualify for the 2023 ODI World Cup.

The Caribbean, the two-time world champions of the first two World Cups in 1975 and 1979 and the runners-up in 1983, will not be represented in the 13th edition of the competition, according to ESPNcricinfo. This is the first time that a World Cup will not have a team from the Caribbean.

West Indies had to participate in the World Cup Qualifiers as they finished ninth in the ODI Super League, which meant that they did not gain direct entry to the ten-team tournament. Only the top eight teams from the league progressed directly to the World Cup.

In the World Cup Qualifiers, West Indies was placed in Group A alongside Zimbabwe, Netherlands, USA, and Nepal. According to the format, only the top three teams from each group advanced to the Super Six stage, which West Indies managed to do. However, their loss to Scotland in Group B means that the maximum number of points they can obtain is four, which is not enough to secure a World Cup ticket to India.

Previously, West Indies qualified for the 2019 ODI World Cup in England through the World Cup Qualifiers. However, they were unable to make it to the Super 12 stage of the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, winning only one match against Zimbabwe and losing two matches to Scotland and Ireland in their group stage.
