Breast cancer in females is the leading cause of cancer incidence and mortality in India. It accounts for 13.5 per cent new cancer cases and 10 per cent of cancer-related deaths. In 2022, a total of 2.3 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer and there were a total of 670,000 deaths globally. Recently, famous TV actress Hina Khan was diagnosed with the condition. She took to her Instagram to share the news. Ever since then, she has been sharing snippets from her journey as she battles cancer.

When should you get tested for Breast Cancer?
While speaking to us, he said, “It is crucial to schedule regular screening for breast cancer. This helps in the early detection of the condition, minimizes the damage caused, and positive treatment outcomes. Women over the age of 40 should consider getting a mammogram, a type of x-ray to closely examine breast for early detection and diagnosis of breast cancer.”
He further explained, “There are numerous tests to detect the growth of breast cancer. It includes tests like self-breast examination, mammogram (a type of x-ray examination of the breast tissues), breast ultrasound, biopsy (a type of test that takes a sample of breast tissues for further examination under the microscope), CT scan, and breast MRI (magnetic resonance imaging).”
Cost of the test
The cost of tests for breast can range from Rs 2000 to Rs 10,000. It is important to note that the cost of these also depends on the type of laboratory/hospital and your surrounding area. Make sure to choose the certified organizations/ hospitals for accurate results.
Is further testing required?
Once biopsy results confirm that you have tested positive for breast cancer, then your doctor may prescribe certain tests to determine how far the breast cancer has extended and its stage. It can include a combination of tests like blood tests such as hormone receptor tests, imaging tests like breast MRI, PET (positron emission tomography) scan, or X-ray, and Lymph node biopsy for creating an effective treatment plan.
Symptoms to look out for
One can experience several symptoms associated with breast cancer, as it starts to progress. This includes symptoms like the formation of a new lump in the armpit, and breast, changes in the shape, color, and texture of the nipples, experiencing intense pain in the breast, blood-like discharge from the nipples, and breast skin becoming irritated, sensitive, and flaky.
What preventive measures can be taken to eliminate the risk of developing breast cancer?
Dr Tirathram says, “Maintaining a healthy lifestyle by eating well-balanced meals that consist of equal amounts of essential nutrients like minerals, vitamins, carbohydrates, and healthy fats, excising for more than 45 minutes, avoiding harmful habits like drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes, and reducing stress can significantly lower your chances of developing breast cancer.”
It is important to schedule regular mammogram testing as it can be helpful in the detection of breast cancer at an early stage which can lead to successful treatment outcomes.
