Dr Ashwani Maichand, Director – Dept of Orthopaedics at the CK Birla Hospital (R), Delhi shares ways to be flexible while dealing with arthritis

Balancing a demanding work schedule while managing arthritis requires a delicate dance between flexibility and self-care. Even though arthritis may create difficulties, one can excel in their career while putting their health and well-being first.

By exploring flexible work options, like telecommuting or adjusted hours. These can reduce the physical strain of commuting and allow a person to work during times when their arthritis symptoms are less severe. Investing in ergonomic office furniture and tools to minimize joint stress. Adjusting the chair, keyboard, and monitor to maintain proper posture and reduce discomfort. Incorporating short, regular breaks into the workday. Stand up, stretch, and move around to prevent stiffness and maintain joint flexibility.

Making self-care a non-negotiable part of the routine. Allocating time for physical exercises, relaxation techniques, and stress management to alleviate pain and improve overall well-being. Coordinating with healthcare providers to create a pain management plan which may involve medications, hot/cold therapy, or assistive devices. This would ensure that a person has all the necessary accommodations, such as wrist supports or adaptive tools.

Maintaining a balanced diet and engaging in regular physical activity according to the body’s condition. Consult a healthcare professional or physical therapist to create an exercise routine that strengthens the joints and muscles. Chronic stress can worsen arthritis symptoms. Practicing stress-reduction techniques like deep breathing, and meditation.

One must remember that flexibility isn’t just about adapting the work; it’s also about adjusting one’s mindset and self-care routines. With the right balance, one can maintain their professional commitments while maintaining their physical and mental health. By prioritizing self-care and seeking support when needed, one can successfully manage arthritis in the workplace.”
