Arsenal forward Kai Havertz was once again in the spotlight as the Gunners took on Brentford at The Emirates this evening.
The 24-year-old German has been in good form of late and been a key reason behind Arsenal making a big surge in recent weeks with some goal-laden results.
However, there are still question marks over Havertz when it comes to being a proper goal-getter. This season has seen countless chances come and go and against Brentford in the first half today, Havertz missed a golden chance when sent through one on one by Jorginho.
And commenting on the incident for Premier League productions, Andy Townsend suggested that the miss showed why Havertz isn’t among the top finishers in the league.
“It’s a great chance. He got the all-important first touch. I thought it was going to go in front of Kai Havertz. It’s a stunning ball. Having made the touch, goalkeeper’s out and spreads himself, you just know that the best finishers end up knocking those ones in. Kai Havertz brings a lot of strengths to this team but they’re the moments that have to end up in the back of the net,” Townsend said.
Kai Havertz has to do better consistently
This isn’t to slate the German too much as he has been doing well recently. But if Arsenal are going to be a force for this season and beyond, then Havertz has to start taking these chances.
At £65m, which isn’t his fault of course, Arsenal fans expect more and if you’re put through one on one in big games, then they have to go in.
Havertz has done this far too often and he simply has to get better at it. The pressure is already on in terms of Arsenal signing another striker this summer so he needs to prove himself.
He’ll get the backing from Mikel Arteta. But it’s on him to deliver at the end of the day.
