Zadie Smith’s The Fraud: A Dazzling Exploration of Truth and Fiction

Penguin Press will be releasing The Fraud, an upcoming novel by acclaimed author Zadie Smith, in September. Smith gained literary acclaim with her debut novel, White Teeth, in 2000. The Fraud is a captivating work of historical fiction set against the backdrop of a legal trial in Victorian England. It explores themes of storytelling and credibility, questioning who deserves to have their stories heard and believed. This long-awaited novel marks Smith’s return to fiction after her previous work, Swing Time.

The story is set in 1873 and follows the life of Mrs. Eliza Touchet, the housekeeper and cousin-by-marriage of the once-famous novelist William Ainsworth. Mrs. Touchet, an intellectually curious woman, has various interests including literature, justice, abolitionism, and social class. However, she is also skeptical of her cousin’s talent, critical of his successful friend Charles Dickens, and distrustful of England’s superficiality. Amidst this, Andrew Bogle, a former slave from Jamaica, finds himself in London as a star witness in a trial involving imposture. His future depends on weaving a convincing narrative.

The novel explores the infamous “Tichborne Trial,” which captivated Mrs. Touchet and the entire nation. The trial involved a lower-class butcher from Australia claiming to be the rightful heir of a significant estate and title. Mrs. Touchet, well-versed in the complexities of the world, and Mr. Bogle, a discerning man, navigate a society filled with hypocrisy and deceit, struggling to uncover what is truly authentic and sincere.

Based on real historical events, The Fraud is a thought-provoking novel that delves into the themes of truth and fiction, the complexities of identity, and the mystery of perception. It juxtaposes the cultures of Jamaica and Britain, exploring the dynamics between fraudulence and authenticity.

Zadie Smith’s previous novels include White Teeth (2000), The Autograph Man (2002), On Beauty (2005), NW (2012), and Swing Time (2016).
