GSAT-24 satellite: Tata Play starts beaming from its GSAT-24 satellite, to increase capacity to 900 channels

New Delhi: Tata Play, a leading direct-to-home (DTH) service provider, announced today that it has initiated the transmission of television channels from its dedicated GSAT-24 satellite. This satellite was leased from the Indian space agency ISRO and was specifically launched for Tata Play (formerly known as TataSky) in June of last year. The GSAT-24 satellite will significantly increase Tata Play’s carrying capacity to 900 channels, covering the entire country, including remote areas like the Andaman Nicobar and Lakshsdweep islands.

After the launch, ISRO took the necessary time to position the satellite in the desired slot of the 36,000-kilometer geosynchronous orbit. Following this, the ISRO conducted its own tests and handed over the satellite to Tata Play.

Speaking about this development, MD & CEO Harit Nagpal expressed his excitement, stating that Tata Play will now be able to carry 900 channels, including the regional channels and the upcoming Gyanwani channels launched by the government. Nagpal highlighted that this move will not only improve signal reception and channel capacity but also make Tata Play the largest satellite bandwidth provider among all DTH platforms.

This is the third made-in-India satellite that Tata Play is utilizing for its DTH service, with all future customers being served by the new satellite. Tata Play is a joint venture between the Tata Group and 21st Century Fox, owned by Rupert Murdoch. The partnership with ISRO’s commercial arm, NSIL (New Space India Ltd), has been instrumental in this endeavor.

In regard to GSAT-24, NSIL Chairman and Managing Director Radhakrishnan Durairaj stated that this satellite marks the first demand-driven communication satellite mission undertaken by NSIL following space sector reforms. Durairaj emphasized that GSAT-24 will revolutionize satellite television in India, supporting domestic broadcasting services with advanced digital TV transmission capabilities, thereby contributing to the Make In India initiative.

ISRO Chairman S Somanath added, “This momentous achievement signifies a revolution in India’s telecommunications space, driven by cutting-edge indigenous technology. It serves as a testament to our nation’s aerospace prowess and heralds India’s successful entry into the demand-driven mission segment.”

GSAT-24, a 4-tonne 24-Ku band communication satellite, was exclusively built by ISRO to cater to Tata Play’s DTH application needs.
