All You Need to Know About NRLW 2023: Dates, Fixtures, Teams, and How to Watch

Jillaroos superstar Millie Boyle has expressed her support for the NRLW’s decision to stand in solidarity with the men’s competition amidst ongoing negotiations for a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). In response to the NRL’s decision to halt progress in drafting a new CBA, both male and female players will be boycotting all game-day media commitments until a draft CBA is presented.

The dispute between the league and its players revolves around several clauses in the CBA, including the NRL’s power to extend the season without player consent, RLPA funds, and ownership of player data. Boyle, speaking to Wide World of Sports, emphasized that the women’s league fully supports the actions being taken and will join forces with their male counterparts to resolve these issues and stand united.

Boyle highlighted the importance of the RLPA delegates and staff in fighting for the players’ rights and what is fair for the game. She stressed that their actions not only benefit the current players but also pave the way for the future generation of players.

On a separate note, NRL CEO Andrew Abdo recently announced significant changes to the NRL Women’s Premiership for the 2023 season. These changes include salary increases, the introduction of four new teams, and a prime-time TV agreement. The NRL has committed to investing $82.1 million into the women’s game over the next five years, with a 153% increase in the competition’s salary cap by 2027.

The addition of the Canberra Raiders, Cronulla Sharks, Wests Tigers, and North Queensland Cowboys brings the total number of teams to ten. Each team will play each other once, resulting in nine regular rounds before the finals series begins in late September.

Excitingly, the 2023 season marks the first time that all NRLW matches will be aired in their entirety on free-to-air TV, with Nine broadcasting every game. The broadcast schedule will include triple-headers, Thursday night games during the NRL finals series, and weekend double-headers leading up to the men’s games.

Fans can catch all the NRLW action live on Nine and 9Now. Nine’s commentary team, led by Emma Lawrence, Danika Mason, and Marlee Silva, will feature former Jillaroos stars Ruan Sims and Allana Ferguson, as well as current Roosters superstar Millie Boyle.

The NRLW season kicks off on July 22 with matches between the Titans and Cowboys, Knights and Dragons, and Broncos and Roosters. The season will conclude with the Grand Final on October 1 at Suncorp Stadium.

Lastly, full squads have been announced for each team participating in the NRLW. Notable players include Ali Brigginshaw (Brisbane Broncos), Tiana Penitani (Cronulla Sharks), Georgia Hale (Gold Coast Titans), Hannah Southwell (Newcastle Knights), and Kirra Dibb (North Queensland Cowboys).

It is an exciting time for the NRLW, with the players showing their solidarity and determination to fight for their rights. With a new CBA on the horizon and improvements to the competition, the future of women’s rugby league looks brighter than ever.
