FIDE Chess Candidates 2024 Round 11 Live Updates: Ian Nepomniachtchi defeated Vidit Gujrathi in a marathon contest to leap into sole lead after Round 11 of the Candidates 2024 chess tournament. The Russian thus assumes sole lead of the contest, followed by Gukesh and Hikaru Nakamura.
Praggnanandhaa lost his Round 11 clash at the Candidates chess tournament to World No 3 Hikaru Nakamura in a game where the 18-year-old from India was playing with white pieces but came under time pressure from early on.
Meanwhile, the other teenager from India, D Gukesh, who is the youngest player in the eight-player field at the Candidates chess tournament, managed to hold on for a draw against World no 2 Fabiano Caruana in their Round 11 clash. While the 17-year-old from Chennai had white pieces, he was behind on the clock from very early on.
In the women’s category at the Candidates, Koneru Humpy defeated Nurgyul Salimova while her compatriot Vaishali Rameshbabu caused a massive upset by defeating Aleksandra Goryachkina.
In the previous round, Gukesh’s big showdown with two-time world chess championship contender Nepomniachtchi fizzled out in a draw after 40 moves while the contest between Praggnanandhaa and Vidit ended in a draw by three-fold repetition.
With just four games remaining in the Candidates, Gukesh and Nepo are on top with six points each while Caruana, Nakamura and Praggnanandhaa are in the chasing back, just half a point behind. Vidit is also in the fray with five points.
