Did Mumbai Indians Dugout Illegally Tell Suryakumar Yadav To Review Wide V Punjab Kings?

A viral video sparked controversy over whether the Mumbai Indians dugout illegally assisted Suryakumar Yadav to ask for a review in the IPL 2024 fixture against Punjab Kings on April 19.

The incident happened off the last ball of the 15th over during Mumbai’s innings. Arshdeep Singh bowled full and way outside off close to the tramline. Suryakumar, batting then on 67 off 47, tried to chase it. The umpire deemed it to be a legal delivery. However, the camera panned towards the Mumbai dugout where head coach Mark Boucher was seen seemingly gesturing a wide, with Tim David signalling the T, apparently asking for a referral along with batting coach Kieron Pollard.

Under Article 2.15 (b) of the Code of Conduct for Players and Team Officials for IPL 2024, a player on the field of play is forbidden to “seek assistance from any person off the field of play in order to decide whether to request a referral to the TV Umpire”.

After the gestures from the dugout, the Mumbai batters did send the decision upstairs for a review. Stand-in captain Sam Curran was seen apparently pointing his fingers at Mumbai’s dugout before the umpire referred the decision to the third umpire.

The decision was eventually overturned and given a wide, with Suryakumar lofting Arshdeep for a four over extra cover off the very next ball.

Jasprit Bumrah (3-21) and Suryakumar (78 off 53) starred in Mumbai’s nine-run victory as a 28-ball 61 from Ashutosh Sharma went in vain.
