Dragons Halfback Seeks Request: Bulldogs Boss Phil Gould Weighs in on Ben Hunt

Dragons Halfback Seeks Request: Bulldogs Boss Phil Gould Weighs in on Ben Hunt

Bulldogs Football Manager, Phil Gould, touched on the rumors of Canterbury’s interest in disgruntled St George Illawarra captain, Ben Hunt, during a recent interview. With the recent request for an immediate release from Hunt, the Bulldogs and the Titans are seen as the most likely contenders to secure his signature. Hunt, who is currently contracted with the Dragons until 2025, is at odds with the club following the sacking of coach Anthony Griffin.

One point of contention is Hunt’s reluctance to play at hooker, a position that some within the Dragons organization believe would benefit the team by allowing young talents Jayden Sullivan and Talatau Amone to form a halves partnership. Despite the Dragons rejecting Hunt’s release request, there is still a possibility that the veteran halfback may leave the club. This could occur through the intervention of another club, a potential swap deal, or even Hunt funding his own exit.

When questioned about the Bulldogs’ interest in signing Hunt on Nine’s 100% Footy, Phil Gould responded by stating, “I think everyone is keeping an eye on the situation.” Gould also emphasized the difficulty of acquiring a quality halfback in the current market, highlighting the scarcity and expense of such players.

In regard to Hunt’s request for an immediate release, Gould admitted to being uncertain about the motivation behind it, saying, “I don’t know what is at the core of his motivation. All I know is that it must be significant for him to make a statement like this. He hasn’t shared his motivation with me.”

Although Canterbury halfback Kyle Flanagan’s contract expires at the end of this year, the Bulldogs already have talented playmaker Matt Burton and rising star Karl Oloapu on their roster. Burton has been playing in the halfback position, with Oloapu at five-eighth, while Flanagan has been relegated to the NSW Cup until recently being given a chance in the NRL due to Burton’s absence.

In conclusion, the possibility of Ben Hunt joining the Bulldogs remains uncertain, with the situation dependent on negotiations between the Dragons and the player.
