London’s Cartoon Museum and British graphic novel publisher SelfMadeHero have collaborated to introduce The First Graphic Novel Award for 2023.

The Guardian newspaper has a longstanding sponsorship of the Guardian First Book Award, recognizing the best book by a debut writer. Notably, Chris Ware received the award in 2001 for his exceptional work, “Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth.” However, now there is a dedicated award for debut graphic novels. London’s Cartoon Museum and British graphic novel publisher SelfMadeHero have jointly launched The First Graphic Novel Award for 2023, exclusively for unpublished authors. Furthermore, the winning entry will be published by SelfMadeHero.

The First Graphic Novel Award invites authors to submit 15-30 pages of their in-progress graphic novel, regardless of the genre. The selected author will receive support from SelfMadeHero to complete the work for publication and will be awarded a prize of £500, sponsored by the bks Agency. All submissions must be received by September 14th, 2023. The project has garnered support from the Authors’ Licensing and Collecting Society (ALCS), the Lakes International Comic Art Festival (LICAF), Thought Bubble Festival, and The bks Agency.

The panel of judges comprises renowned graphic novel editor Ayoola Solarin, artist Mark Wallinger, Cartoon Museum Learning & Outreach Officer Steve Marchant, broadcast journalist Alex Fitch, graphic novelist Sabba Khan, author of the award-winning “The Roles We Play” (shortlisted in 2018), and Emma Hayley, Director of SelfMadeHero. James Spackman from The bks Agency will review the longlisted creators’ work.

This initiative follows the announcement of the Caliburn Prize, offering $2500 and support to unpublished British comics creators.

Cartoon Musuem & SelfMadeHero To Fund First Graphic Novels

The First Graphic Novel Award was originally established by Myriad Editions in 2012 as the Myriad First Graphic Novel Competition. Myriad has not only published books by the four finalists but also works by six other shortlisted authors. The award has been spearheaded by Corinne Pearlman, project leader and judge, who served as Myriad’s former Creative Director. Previous winners include Gareth Brookes (The Black Project, 2012), Jade Sarson (For the Love of God, Marie!, 2014), Jenny Robins (Biscuits, 2018), and Veronika Muchitsch (Cyberman, 2022). Pearlman has now launched the award as an independent platform with initial funding from the Authors’ Collecting and Licensing Society (ALCS). She expresses enthusiasm, saying, “I’m thrilled to carry forward this award in collaboration with new partners The Cartoon Museum, SelfMadeHero, and ALCS. Myriad’s renowned catalog of graphic novels has greatly benefitted from this initiative, and now we can extend that experience to others. We are proud to offer a prize of £500 to the winner, thanks to the generous sponsorship from the bks Agency.”

Emma Hayley, Director of SelfMadeHero, states, “The UK greatly needs initiatives like this. As the future publisher of the winning entry, SelfMadeHero is committed to nurturing and inspiring new talent. I am incredibly excited to be a part of this endeavor.”

Joe Sullivan, Director of the Cartoon Museum, adds, “The First Graphic Novel competition has a remarkable history of discovering exceptional new talent. The Museum is dedicated to promoting emerging artists, and we eagerly anticipate discovering our newfound favorite graphic novels later this year.”
