Former New England Patriots quarterback, Ryan Mallett, reportedly drowns in tragic incident

Former Arkansas Razorbacks quarterback Ryan Mallett, known for his time in the NFL with the New England Patriots, Houston Texans, and Baltimore Ravens, has tragically passed away at the age of 35.

The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office has reported that Mallett died in an apparent drowning. This news has been confirmed by White Hall High School, where Mallett served as a football coach in his home state of Arkansas.

Hunter Yurachek, the athletic director at the University of Arkansas, expressed his condolences, saying that they have lost an exceptional individual.

Yurachek further added, “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family, friends, and teammates of Ryan Mallett.”

Mallett began his football career at the University of Michigan before transferring to the University of Arkansas. During his time with the Razorbacks, he threw for 7,493 yards and 62 touchdowns in just two seasons.

In the 2011 NFL draft, Mallett was selected by the New England Patriots in the third round. Although he only played in four games for the Patriots in the 2012 season, completing just one pass for 17 yards, he made a lasting impact.

Bill Belichick, the head coach of the Patriots, expressed his deep sorrow at Mallett’s passing. Belichick stated, “I am extremely saddened by Ryan’s tragic passing. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and all those whose lives he touched.”

Mallett went on to have stints with the Houston Texans and Baltimore Ravens, making a total of six starts in nine games with the Texans and two starts in eight appearances with the Ravens. In his NFL career, he completed 190 of his 345 pass attempts for 1,835 yards, throwing for nine touchdowns and ten interceptions.

One of Mallett’s memorable moments came in November 2014 when he led the Texans to a 23-7 victory against the Cleveland Browns. It was during this game that he threw his first career touchdown pass, a 2-yarder to defensive end J.J. Watt.

Upon hearing the news, J.J. Watt expressed his grief on Twitter, saying, “Horrible news to read about Ryan Mallett. Gone way too soon. Rest in Peace brother.”
