Kate Mulgrew, known for her roles in Prodigy and Voyager, has decided to skip the upcoming GalaxyCon Raleigh and Las Vegas Star Trek conventions in order to show her support for the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes.

Michelle Hurd, the SAG-AFTRA Los Angeles Vice President, has been one of the most vocal voices during the SAG strike. Kate Mulgrew, who has played prominent roles in Voyager and Prodigy, has also joined the cause. As part of the strike, union members are not just halting work on their current projects, but also abstaining from promotional activities such as convention appearances. In a social media post, Mulgrew stated, “I’m not attending the GalaxyCon Raleigh & Las Vegas cons in solidarity with the SAG-AFTRA/WGA strike. I look forward to seeing my fans at future events when a contract is reached. We are at a pivotal moment in labor history; everyone deserves fair compensation.”

Mulgrew’s future with Star Trek is uncertain as Paramount has canceled the Nickelodeon animated series and removed it from their streaming service Paramount+. However, the creators, Dan and Kevin Hageman, have not given up on the series and are actively searching for a new home. This, of course, is currently difficult due to the ongoing strikes by SAG-AFTRA and the earlier WGA strike. These labor disputes primarily revolve around the issue of fair compensation, which includes concerns about streaming residuals and the use of AI technology. Additionally, the structure of TV shows on streaming platforms differs from those on network television, often featuring fewer episodes per season.

Kimiko Glenn, Mulgrew’s co-star in Orange Is the New Black, shared on social media that she only received $27 in residuals from the Netflix series. Mandy Moore, star of This Is Us, revealed that she received streaming residuals as low as a penny to 81 cents for her Disney-produced NBC drama on Hulu.
