Match Referee Verdict: Ashes news 2023 – Ollie Robinson reprimanded for ‘borderline’ Usman Khawaja send-off

England’s Ollie Robinson has avoided punishment for his fiery dismissal of Usman Khawaja in an emotionally charged first Test at Edgbaston. Match referee Andy Pycroft decided not to fine the fast bowler for the controversial moment, where it is believed he shouted obscenities after getting the Australian batsman out. The ICC did not comment on the referee’s decision, but sources close to the Sydney Morning Herald said it was a “borderline case”. The governing body’s rules state that a send-off can include verbally abusing the dismissed batsman and result in a fine up to 50% of the player’s match fee. However, it was determined that Robinson’s celebration was more exaggerated than a true send-off, according to a source. The incident received mixed reactions, with some criticizing the remark considering Khawaja’s impressive innings of 141, for which he was named man of the match. While Robinson and his teammates celebrated the wicket, Joe Root showed sportsmanship by patting Khawaja on the back for his efforts. Khawaja, who claimed to not hear Robinson’s comments due to the loud crowd, described it as friendly banter and emphasized the good spirit in which the game was played. Ironically, Robinson was the one who conceded the winning runs, while his teammate Moeen Ali was fined for using a healing agent on his blistered finger. Additionally, both teams were fined for slow over rates. For more sports news and exclusive content, subscribe to our newsletter from Wide World of Sports.
