Pat Cummins, Nathan Lyon lead Australia to triumph against England at Edgbaston

Seventy-two runs separated Pat Cummins from an improbable Australian victory when he stepped onto the field on the fifth day of the Edgbaston Test. Despite losing Alex Carey shortly after, the Australians managed to form an exceptional partnership of 55 runs between Cummins and Nathan Lyon, leading them to a memorable win in the first Ashes Test. Cummins sealed the victory with a boundary, prompting England great Michael Atherton to commend his composure and leadership. Australian legend Ricky Ponting also expressed his amazement at the thrilling conclusion to the match. The Australian dressing room erupted in celebration as Cummins and Lyon embraced each other in jubilation. This victory marked Australia’s highest successful run chase against England since 1948.

Ben Stokes’ captaincy on the final day of the test was commendable, as he made key bowling decisions and claimed important wickets, including that of Usman Khawaja. However, Stokes did give Lyon a lifeline when he dropped a catch, preventing Hazlewood from joining Cummins at the crease. With Cummins having scored 44 runs and Lyon contributing 16, the Australians were able to avoid a nerve-wracking end with Hazlewood coming in to bat. The match resumed late on the fifth day due to inclement weather, and Broad continued to trouble the Australian batsmen by dismissing Boland and Head. Moeen Ali also got in on the action by dismissing Travis Head, while Cameron Green fell to Robinson. Khawaja’s dismissal and Carey’s caught and bowled wicket seemed to make an Australian victory highly unlikely, but the remarkable resistance shown by Cummins and Lyon made for an unforgettable finish to the Edgbaston Test.
