Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has expressed his disappointment with the exclusion of Cheteshwar Pujara from the Indian test squad for the West Indies series. Pujara had previously played against Australia in the World Test Championship Final.
In an interview with Sports Today, Gavaskar questioned the rationale behind dropping Pujara while other players also underperformed. He emphasized Pujara’s dedication and consistent contributions to Indian cricket, suggesting that his omission seemed unjustified.
Gavaskar further highlighted that Pujara’s lack of a large social media following should not be the sole factor in determining his place in the team. He called for the selectors to provide a clear explanation for their decision.
The former opening batter also raised concerns regarding the selection criteria, suggesting that players who continue to perform well and maintain their fitness should not be dropped solely based on their age.
Pujara was left out of the Indian squad for the two-Test series against the West Indies in July. Young openers Ruturaj Gaikwad and Yashasvi Jaiswal have been included in the team as potential replacements for Pujara.
In the Test match against Australia, Pujara scored a total of 41 runs across both innings. His scores were 14 in the first innings and 27 in the second. The entire Indian batting lineup struggled in the challenging conditions at The Oval, with the team scoring only 296 and 234 runs in the two innings.
