Travellers Championship to be Held as Part of PGA Tour 2023

Min Woo Lee, alongside his caddy, executed an impressive monster putt during the second round of the Travellers Championship, catapulting him up the leaderboard. Lee patiently waited for about 15 minutes for the fairway and green to clear, strategically positioning his second shot on the par-five 13th to just under 17 meters from the hole and successfully sinking the putt.

Reflecting on his performance, Lee admitted feeling a slight nervousness while waiting for the groups in front to clear, a relatable sentiment for amateur golfers who anxiously pause for greens to clear before executing their shots. However, despite the nerves, Lee confidently drained the putt and described the experience as both daunting and rewarding. He felt that he deserved this successful putt, as he had missed several others earlier in the round.

In addition to his remarkable putt, Lee made birdies on the first, sixth, and fourteenth holes, as well as an eagle, enabling him to climb an impressive nine places on the leaderboard. He currently sits tied for seventh place at nine under par. However, he is still six shots behind joint leaders Denny McCarthy and Keegan Bradley.

Lee’s participation in the Travellers Championship was unexpected, as he had initially planned to support his sister, Minjee, in her pursuit of victory at the Women’s PGA Championship. However, his top ten finish at the US Open earned him a last-minute entry into the tournament.

Among the top ten contenders, Lee is joined by fellow Australians Adam Scott and Cameron Davis, making them the only non-Americans in the group. Furthermore, Jason Day successfully made the cut, trailing four shots behind the leaders.

Denny McCarthy continued his exceptional performance by following up his first-round score of 60 with a solid 65 in the morning round at TPC River Highlands. Shortly after, Keegan Bradley delivered an outstanding performance, shooting a 63 to complement his opening round of 62.

Both McCarthy and Bradley surpassed the 36-hole record set by Justin Rose in 2010 and matched by Xander Schauffele last year. While pleased with his achievement, McCarthy acknowledges that a golf tournament consists of more than just 36 holes and remains focused on maintaining his impressive form throughout the weekend.

Bradley particularly excelled during the back nine holes, securing five consecutive birdies from the 12th to the 16th holes. To show his appreciation to his putter, he held it in front of him with two fingers and bowed after each successful putt, displaying his gratitude for the putter’s exceptional performance.

Rory McIlroy, currently tied for 10th place at eight under par after a solid score of 64, faced a minor setback on the par-three eighth hole, the same hole where he achieved a hole-in-one during the first round. This time, his tee shot landed in the water due to a misjudgment of the wind. However, he remained optimistic, stating that aside from this incident, his round was excellent.

On his final hole, McIlroy encountered an obstacle when his tee shot landed on a cable trench behind a tree on the ninth hole. Fortunately, a tournament official granted him relief, but his approach shot hit a tree limb while still managing to land just shy of the green. Despite the challenging circumstances, McIlroy skillfully got up and down to secure a par for the hole.

Lucas Herbert also performed admirably, finishing with a score of eight under after a superb round of 64. Furthermore, Scottie Scheffler, the top-ranked player, reached seven under par with a solid score of 70.

As for the weather conditions, a light rain softened the greens, contributing to the low scores achieved during the tournament. The cut line was set at four under par, resulting in Masters champion Jon Rahm being eliminated from the competition after rounds of 67 and 71.

Anticipating heavy rain in the early stages of the third round, organizers have scheduled tee times in threesomes off both the first and tenth tees.
