As the Pride festivities in Toronto approach and the Pride Parade on Church Street is just around the corner, let’s take a moment to appreciate the presence and representation of 2SLGBTQI+ characters in video games.
According to Wikipedia, the 1985 game “Le Crime du Parking” was the first to feature a 2SLGBTQI+ character. The game introduced Paco, a gay man involved in the drug trade. Interestingly, it is not widely known that Birdo from Super Mario Bros. 2 is considered the earliest trans icon in a video game. Birdo is referred to as a “male who believes that he is a female” and prefers to be called “Birdetta.”
Several other popular games have included LGBTQ characters over the years. “Phantasy Star II” features Usvestia, a gay man; Tony appears in “Earthbound”; Flea is present in “Chrono Trigger”; Tatsuya Suou makes an appearance in “Persona 2: Innocent Sin”; Quina Quen is found in “Final Fantasy IX”; James “Jimmy” Hopkins can be seen in “Bully”; Sander Cohen is a character in “BioShock”; Commander Shepard’s sexuality in “Mass Effect” depends on player choice; Ellie is featured in “The Last of Us”; and Aloy is the protagonist of “Horizon Zero Dawn.”
Popular games like “League of Legends,” “Dragon Age Inquisition,” and “Overwatch” also include multiple LGBTQ characters. And let’s not forget the unforgettable relationship with Iron Bull from “Dragon Age.”
However, my personal favorite bi/pansexual character in a video game is Zagreus from “Hades.” Flirting with Thanatos was my absolute delight while playing.
