Novak Djokovic Receives Fine for Racquet Abuse in Wimbledon Final Loss – Tennis News 2023

Novak Djokovic has incurred a hefty fine of over $11,000 for forcefully smashing his racquet against the net post during his defeat to Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final. The incident took place in the fifth set when the 36-year-old Serbian lost his serve in the third game, resulting in a furious reaction as the match slipped away from him. In response to Djokovic’s outburst, he was promptly given a warning for a code violation. The fine of $11,734 will be subtracted from his runner-up prize money of $2.25 million. Following his racquet-smashing display, Djokovic appeared visibly tense in the final set after missing a straightforward opportunity to break serve and go 2-0 up. Alcaraz capitalized on this and managed to break Djokovic’s serve in the following game, prompting the emotional outburst from the Serbian and receiving boos from a section of the Centre Court crowd. Ultimately, Alcaraz, the world number one, took full advantage of the break and secured a hard-fought 1-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 victory after an exhausting four hours and 42 minutes.
